THE
EVOLVING MAN: FINDING YOUR VOICE
AT HOME AND AT WORK…
Change has been so rapid over the last several decades that many
have found it almost impossible to keep pace. Further, being adaptable enough to succeed when the rules
change in the blink of an eye can be more than daunting…
The world evolves for both sexes. What
were once considered the traditional roles are no longer necessarily
applicable. New demands are put on men—and on
women. Some women, by inclination,
want to be the breadwinner, or be responsible for a healthy portion of bringing
in family revenue. Some men, by
choice, prefer to be working in a home based business, or handling family
matters as a stay-at-home dad. Pigeonholing people by gender makes little sense
in a modern world. Thus, roles
sometimes change to adapt to circumstances in the family. Then when you consider demographic and
economic factors, downsizing in all its forms can wreak havoc on families.
What can we do to minimize the problems that modern life presents
to family living and the need to work, not only to earn a living, but to
fulfill deep inner needs that we all have?
Is
it possible these changes, wanted or unwanted, professional and personal, could
lead to a level of purpose and happiness previously unimagined? How do we open
those doors that help us evolve to another, and perhaps better level of
success?
That’s where Jeffrey Hickey comes in with his presentation, The
Evolving Man: Finding Your Voice
At Home And At Work. Drawing on three
decades of experience, the youngest son of legendary football coach Howard
“Red” Hickey, the inventor of the Shotgun Formation, former head coach of the
San Francisco 49ers, and chief talent scout for the Dallas Cowboys, Jeffrey
Hickey learned at an early age the key ingredient for success in every field,
from pro football to the entertainment business is communication. In fact, Jeff taught these secrets to
the animation staff at Pixar.
Jeffrey Hickey believes that in every person, there is a voice that is most
effective for communicating, and roles that are most effective for using that
voice. But in order to find that voice and those roles, the key is not
necessarily what you have to say. The key is understanding how you are being
perceived while you communicate. The perception of others will determine the
effectiveness of your message. This is true at work and home.
In
order to understand how you are being perceived, you have to learn the greatest
single key to effective communication: listening. That means listening with
your ears, your eyes, and your heart. That means listening to criticism and
accepting that all criticism is valid, even if you disagree. This is not a
simple process, and can sometimes be challenging
. But when you truly find your voice, the results, whether at work or home, are
often immediately liberating.
